1320HP towboat

By on March 25, 2014 in Projects

In May of 2013, Tell City Boat Works contracted to build a 1320HP towboat. The boat is a Tell City Boat Works design measuring 55 feet by 22 feet by 7-1/2 feet and has an operating draft of 5-1/2 feet. Power is supplied from a pair of Cummins QSK19MCRS diesel engines rated at 660 hp each at 1800 rpm. The engines are coupled to Twin Disc model MGX5222DC reduction gears with a 4.51:1 ratio turning 4 blade, Kahlenberg 52 by 46-in, stainless steel workhorse wheels on 4-1/2 inch shafts. The two steering and four flanking rudders are controlled by a full follow up and non-follow up hydraulic steering system supplied by Custom Hydraulic Components.

Electrical power comes from a pair of John Deere CKM40DM-3 Tier 3 generator engines with Marathon generators rated for 40kw and 3 phase operation. The main and generator engines are cooled with fresh water circulated through keel coolers from R.W. Fernstrum & Company.

The hull is made from 1/2 inch plate on the bottom and 3/8 inch plate on the deck and sides. Within the hull are reservoirs for 5700 gallons of fuel, 700 gallons of slop oil, and 700 gallons of bilge storage. The superstructure steel is 1/4 inch plate throughout.

The pilot house is equipped with a Furuno electronics package. The package includes AIS, radar, VHF radio, depth sounder, loudhailer, and GPS systems. Mounted atop the pilothouse is a Carlisle & Finch Xenon search light with manual controls and a Kahlenberg dual trumpet air horn.

Two 40 ton Nabrico DF-1-40 electric winches are mounted to the deck. One forward h-bitt, four 24 inch kevels, and two 6 inch button surround the rest of the deck. The hull and the push knees are protected by Schuyler bumpers.
